Problem with Visio - dies when rotating shape

Hi, I have a copy of Microsoft Visio for Enterprise Architects SP-2
(10.0.6871) which came with VS2003.NET EA and there is a problem. I
am running it on XP Pro x64 SP2 which is fully updated and the issue
is that Visio frequently dies unexpectedly. One particular case is
where I try to rotate a hole in a wall (in the Building Plan stencil)
by selecting the rotate toolbar button and double clicking the hole
but it does quite generally seem flakey.

I am not currently using Visio with VS2003 but will do later. I did
try the "Detect and Repair" function in the Help menu but that did not
change anything.

Any ideas gratefully received,

That sounds like a video drivers problem to me. Have you checked to
see if updated drivers are available?

Hi, thanks for the reply. My PC has a Radion 2400HD card and I just
upgraded to the latest version of the ATI Catalist suite V8.7 which
did not cure the problem.

Do you have any pointer towards narrowing down the problem further
perhaps ?

Unless it's a bug in the x64 system somewhere ...
Have you tried changing video settings, different resolution/ color
depth etc, turn off hardware acceleration ...

Well, I have tried the following :

1. Uninstalled the cideo driver completely and run the native VGA
driver instead - no good
2. Run in Safe mode - works fine
3. Run in safe mode with networking - works fine
4. Run with VGA (not ATI) driver as 1 but with most processes slayed
- no good

I get the problem whenever I do even the simplest thing in Visio, eg
start Visio and select the basic diagram type for new drawing; drag
heptagon shape to drawing; double-click on heptagon in drawing -
KABOOM !

It definitely seems to be related to double-clicking though rather
than anything else.

I have taken a listing of the runing processes using Pslist from the
sysinternals toolset and have apended them below. The first list is
the safe mode list and the second is what is running when I slay
everything I can when not in safe mode.

Any further ideas gratefully received.

I think you need help from a more knowledgable source, either report
it as a problem or wait for Barb or someone ....

Mike this does sound like a driver issue since it appears to work properly in
safe mode. You could try another driver for your video card or turn down the
hardware acceleration. I don’t recall seeing any issues with this video card
at this time.

I don't think it can be a driver issue because the same driver (the
Windows default VGA driver) works in safe mode but doesn't work when
the ATI driver is unloaded from Windows when not in safe mode ?

Sounds to me like the video driver is needed to correct a fault in the
video card.

If you check the event viewer does it give any indication what is causing
the crash? It sounds like we need more information about your system you may
want to open a case with Microsoft Support.
