Problem with WORD 2002 exiting

Everytime we have a small power hit at the house, WORD starts acting funny.
It only stays active for 10 seconds and then quits and a ghost
file(~$xxx.doc) appears in the area/folder that the original appears. Anyone
seen this or know of a fix.

Thanks,

Consider getting a good surge protector and uninterruptible power
supply. The ~$xxx.doc file is known as the "owner file". See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 "Description of how
Word creates temporary files". Ordinarily, Word will
automatically delete the temporary files when the related Word
document is closed normally. But if Word crashes or if
user/network permissions are not set correctly, then the
temporary files sometimes don't get deleted automatically. It's
usually safe to manually delete temporary files that are more
than a few days old.

....and until you get a UPS (depending on your needs, they can be had for as
little as $30US or so), and even after that, you'd do well to enable
AutoRecovery, and set the interval fairly short (I keep mine set at the
minimum: 1 minute). It's in Tools - Options - Save.

When you have unsaved changes in document, Word automatically saves a copy
(.asd, I think) in the AutoRecover folder (Tools - Options - File
locations). When you save, the copy is removed. If Word craps out between a
save and new work (depending on the autorecover interval), the .asd file
doesn't get deleted. Word automatically detects any .asd files when it
starts up, and offers to recover work from them.

It can save you not only from power glitches, but from the odd crash, as
well.
