Problematic persistent formatting/styles

I have two problems. May or may not be related.

Problem 1: I have an entries in a table that won't accept
a style/formatting change - they have somehow managed to
get a character spacing of +10.25. Here's what doesn't fix
the problem:
- Clear formatting (through the styles and formatting
sidebar)
- Applying a new style
- Changing the character spacing using the Format/Font
window
- I can delete whatever style it says it has, but then a
new style is immediately created with a new name and the
expanded attribute. Here's the name and definition of my
latest style:Style Style Normal + Before: 2.4 ptA +
Expanded by 10.25 pt + Expanded by 10.25.
This is based on normal (normal does not have this
problem) and there is only one column in one table where I
am having this problem. I can alter other paragraph and
character attributes (space before, make it bold, etc.)
but I cannot remove the expanded spacing. There also
appears to be a heavy aqua blue underine when I put the
cursor in the cell of the table.

Problem 2: In another document, I have one paragraph that
I cannot change from a Style. It's like the style change
won't take. I can format it to looks fine, but because I
am building a TOC, I want to get MS Word to recognize the
correct style.

Any ideas on either of these?

Seems I have this expanded text problem in two tables, the
mean column each time, so perhaps this is due to having
formerly been part of an excel calculation?
