Problems deleting email from Outlook

One of my coworkers received an email from someone he knows which came with a
subject line "from [person's name]" but no email address or name appeared in
the From column. When he tried to open the email (which has no attachment),
he immediately received "This program has performed an illegal operation" and
clicking close to that message shut down all of Outlook. So, determining it
was not a good file, we began to try to delete it. But trying to delete or
move it produced the same message and the same shut down of Outlook.
Miraculously, one of these times the email actually did move into the deleted
items folder (we found upon reopening Outlook). However, any attempt to
permanently delete the file out of the deleted items folder fails in the form
of an illegal operation and shut down. We've restarted the computer twice
without any change in the way the file behaves. Is this a virus or a
corrupted file or something else entirely? How can we rid ourselves of it?
