Problems importing messages from Outlook Express into Outlook

I am having problems importing messages from outlook express. First I
couldn't figure out how to transfer them from W95 machine running Outlook
Express to another machine running XP and getting the messages to import to
Outlook. I was able to resolve this and import the messages but now the
problem is that many of the messages imported with a date of 12/16/03 (the
day I imported) vs. the real date they were received.

I found similar instruction on a Microsoft page. I was able to get things
imported into Outlook on the XP machine - but... quite a few messages
imported with a "received" date that shows up as today (12/16/03) in the
window that displays the messages for a folder - but when the messages are
opened up they show the proper date (some are significantly in the past)

Why would this happen and can it be avoided?

If you export the messages from OE instead of importing from Outlook, the
proper dates should be preserved.
