Problems in exporting Outlook Express messages

My old PC used W98 Edition 2 with Outlook Express 5, my new PC has XP Home
Edition with Outlook Express 6. When I tried to export my messages from OE5 I
received an IMAP error that stopped the export dead. Has anyone encountered
this and if so is there a solution? (However, I had no problems exporting the
address book and importing it into OE6.) Thanks.
