I'm having troubles to insert avi video in my presentation in powerpoint 2003.
I try to select: insert movies from file, then I select the file. It appears
on screen, but as a frame without movement. When a click on it turns black.
If I click outside the box it comes back initial image frame stopped.
Now I'm using Windows XP. I updated the windows, the office, and downloaded
the divx package for XP, but unfortunately it doesn't work.
When I had windows 98SE and Office 2000, it worked perfectly.
Could anybody help me?

Most likely your problem is not having the proper codec installed on the
computer (sounds like you were attempting to overcome this by installing the
Divx package). The other possibility is the animation settings, which are
very different in PPT 2003 vs. PPT 2000.

First, open the animation pane and see if you can figure out the animation
settings and that all is set properly.

Second, for the codec you have two choices: 1) figure out what codec is
needed and install it on your computer, the downside is the movie will only
play on your computer. 2) re-render (resave) the movie with a more standard
codec. The easiest way to re-render is to use the new PFC Media add-in (it
is not free, but does have a free demo period), as it not only does the
insert movie function but will also re-render the movie to a Microsoft
standard codec (www.pfcmedia.com).

Thanks for your answer.
The small movies I'm trying to put in ppt presentation has codec: divxmpg4
v3, and I have divx package installed.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand when you tell me to open the animation
pane, because the movie is not a animation, like gif animated, you know,
they're 10-15 seconds videos of echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound), and
after I posted the message, I tryied to do the same thing in ppt 2003, using
win xp service pack II in another machine, and I succeed, but I can't do it
in may home pc.
The suggestion to resave the movies " re-render (resave) the movie with a
more standard codec. The easiest way to re-render is to use the new PFC
Media add-in (it is not free, but does have a free demo period), as it not
only does the insert movie function but will also re-render the movie to a
Microsoft standard codec (www.pfcmedia.com)." , I didn't understand well. Is
PFC Media a software or a plug in for win media player? If it' a software is
suggestion is to open the movie inside the software and save it with the same
avi format or in another format?
I apologise if I ask basics procedures, but I'm not a software profession, I
just use ppt in my presentation.
I'm thankfull for your help and wait your answer.

Divx is a tricky codec because there are many varieties of it. Because it is
an open source format, some developers make their own version of it that may
not work with the general Divx package... Possibly the issue here.

Does the video play in Windows Media Player (not in PowerPoint, but directly
in WMP)? If yes, the issue lies in PPT handing off the video. If no, the
problem lies in the computer codecs.

PFCMedia is a PowerPoint add-in. It adds a new menu within PowerPoint that
replaces the INSERT >> MOVIE FROM FILE command with its own. Best thing to
do is read about it on their website and download the trial version (trial
version is fully functional I believe - try it to insert your movie and see
if it solves the problem).

Dear Troy Chollar,

Fortunately, I got the solution by myself, and I'd like to tell you how I
got it just to serve other people if they have the same problem.
I opened the .avi files in windows media player 10, then I saved the files
as .wmv. After that I insert the files in ppt, as usual, from files, and
everything worked perfectly.
I don't know the reasons for that, because in my office pc I did it with the
same files in .avi, using the sames win xp service pack 2 and office 2003 and
win media player 10, but it works anyway.
Anyway thank you attention,

Guilherme do Valle
