I'm using Word from OfficeXP Professional (Brazilian version). It has worked
flawlessly until a couple of months ago. When trying to insert a figure
(image) it locks up.

When I click on a file in the open dialog box, the filename does not appear
in the textbox. If I copy and paste, or type in, the filename it will
insert - if I'm patient and wait ten or twenty minutes (no kidding).

Anybody know why this could be happening and how to fix it? I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. Also, I updated MS Office -
again, no help.

Are you on a network? I had a similar problem and found
that the network administrators renamed some of the
servers that I was connected to. These invalid network
connections slowed every program down when it was looking
for files as in the case of Insert Figure. By removing
the connections it solved the problem for me. Good luck.

Hi Richard,

Does this issue still occur if you start Word using the /a switch? Go
to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

Also, are you connected to a network? If so, does the problem still
occur if you are disconnected?

No. This computer is not on a network. I'd tried winword /a but the problem
still exists.
