Problems opening Excel

I have not had any problems with Excel until today...do
not use it very often but need it when I do. Every time I
tried to open any of my Excel files which I keep in a
folder, the Windows Installer popped up and tried to
install Windows XP professional with Front Page ( I have
Home Edition of XP) So I could not open my files. I found
the excel.exe file and created a short cut and can open
files from that but it is still frustrating that I cannot
open files in the folder. I disabled the Windows
Installer, downloaded the new Service Pack that is
available. The latest is that I can still open from the
excel. exe file but cannot open the individual
files...says now that they do not exist...yet when I open
them from excel.exe, they are very much there. I have
checked Folder options and that is fine..shows that Excel
will open the files. Any advice please?

Try re-registering Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1 ) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

Note the space between exe and the slashmark(/)

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.

In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

You will get the "preparing to install" message and the "please wait while
configuring etc."

Let it run the course and you should be good to go.

Also with Excel open go into Tools>Options>General and uncheck "ignore other
applications".

Thanks...I tried the first action...nothing happened!
When you say designate a full path....I am afraid I do
not understand...what path would I put in after C:\ ? I
also made sure that "ignore other applications" is
unchecked.

By "first action" do you mean the step?

Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.

You won't see anything happen at this step. Maybe the cursor changes to an
hour glass for a second or two.

The next step "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK should start the installer.

Your full path is unknown to me. Only you know where the \Office folder is.

Generally "C:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe" /regserver

In this case you would use the quote marks as above.
