Problems sending/opening .doc/.docx attachments in Entourage 2008

Anna_bd

Hello, if anyone can help i'd be eternally grateful.

* ** i originally posted this in a thread in the word forum, but it's prob more relevant here*****

I've got a document, saved as a .docx file which i am trying to send to my professor. I am sending the file using entourage.

He can't read it on his windows based machine. But interestingly, if i try and read the attachment that i've sent (from the sent-mail) it also doesn't open properly. I get an error that says the file is corrupted. It does open, but a lot of the formating is lost. My professor, on the other hand, can't open it at all.

I have also been having problems opening any word files that have been sent to me, i assumed these files were actually corrupt - but now i think it may be a problem with my entourage settings.

Edit: It definitely seems to be a problem with entourage as if i send the file via webmail it can open correctly on my machine (and i am hoping therefore on his). I'd like to fix this as it's a bit of a pain having to use webmail whenever i want to send attachments... i've tried using the MIME extension, and checking the 'Append file extension' box is checked when i save it. But no luck. I cannot open or send .docx word files from entourage.

Can anyone help?

I¹m not aware of any inherent problem in this area I (and lots of other
people) are sending doc & docx files around all day.

What sort of account is it? (Exchange, IMAP, POP3 etc).

Also, details of OS X version and hardware platform may help.

Like Barry, I'm not seeing problems with any Word document corruption.
Try these ideas:

1. Look in Entourage menu --> Preferences... --> Mail & News Preferences
--> Compose and check your encoding for Attachments. AppleDouble should
work but also try "Windows (MIME/Base64)".

2. What happens if you use the Finder's Compress feature to make a .zip
file and send that? Right-click or Control-click the file and select
"Compress...".

3. Use Entourage's Switch Identity... feature to create a new identity
and test with it. You may have corruption in your current identity
causing this problem.

If the new identity works then try repairing your old identity by
holding the Option key as you launch Entourage.

Hope this helps!

I am having the same problem with attachments I receive. They show up us valid word documents, but when I go to open them they say the file might be in use or not a valid word document.

DItto: Last week I installed Office 2008 Student Teacher Edition on my office MacBookPro (running OS 10.5.2). Today I sent my first email (using Entourage) with two attachments, a Word (.docx) and an Excel (.xlsx) both created on Office 2008. The receiving party phoned me to say he could not open the attachments on his PC. I changed the attachments' suffixes to .doc and .xls and resent them. He called again to say that he still could not open them. Next, I emailed both versions of the attachments to my home MacPro (Os 10.4.9). They would not open except as jibberish.

I will try the remedies suggested above and another posted in the Apple discussions ( <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6467371&#6467371> ) and let you know what happens.

Other than this issue, I am enjoying Office 2008.

Had the same issue. This fixed it: Change the Save preference in Word and the Compatibility preference in Excel and the Save preference in PowerPoint to save documents as Word 97-2004 Document (.doc) and Excel 97-2004 Workbook (.xls) and PowerPoint 97-2004 Presentation (.ppt) respectively.

That is all it takes to allow all who receive you emails to be able to read them.

I agree with Office 2008 posters, that the new versions (.docx, .xlsx and .pptx) should be backward compatible. Perhaps a patch will be forthcoming to make it so.

I too am having a similar problem. I am using new iMac with Leopard. We use a
hosted Exchange service at Mailstreet.com. I installed Entourage 2008.

My problem is specific to pdf attachment. The person receiving the message
gets a "file corrupt" message. If is send the attachment via web mail it is
fine.

This is a huge issue for me.

Thanks

Hi,

There is a tool called Advanced PDF Repair. I have used it to repair
many corrupt PDF files successfully. Its homepage is http://www.datanumen.com/apdfr/
Maybe you can ask your recievers to try it if you still cannot this
problem.
