problems setting up Master-sub projects with Project server

I've seen a few messages on this, looking to see if anyone
has answers. These are some of the problems I've
encountered when setting up Master/sub-projects with MS
Project Server:

1) sub-projects listed under the master project do not
expand (i.e. can't see tasks in the sub-project if it is
part of a master project)

2) similarly, resources cannot open up the subproject
individually, they can only open up the master project,
which causes problems because under #1 I said that they
can't expand the sub-project (I even tried playing games
with assigning the resource as an explicit resource to the
sub-project, and it seemed to want to keep making it a
resoure to the master project)

3) upon playing around with it further, engineers were
unable to see ANY projects or ANY tasks, and project
manager could not see any resources

If anyone has information to produce the following, it
would be helpful:
1) set up a master project with sub-projects
2) project manager can see entire master project and all
sub-projects
3) sub-projects inside master project plan can expand to
show tasks
4) project manager can see all resources
5) resources can view all of their tasks
6) resources can view sub-project plan to which they are
assigned in project center

Michael:

Microsoft doesn't recommend the use of Master Projects in Project Server. If
you're going to use them, use them for the purpose of generating reports and
views in the Project client. Always assign resources and publish assignments
from the subprojects, never from the master projects. As you've already
discovered, they don't contribute much to the Project Center. Make sure you
turn off publish master projects and allow folks to save them only.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the information. I have a master project with
several sub-projects on my local machine. I've uploaded a
couple to the server, and this is what I see:

1) the project manager can see the project, but CANNOT see
any resources (or tasks)
2) the team members CANNOT see the project, and CANNOT see
their own tasks

I didn't create the files, they were given to me by a
project manager. What I believe he has done is created a
shared pool of resources (I believe some engineers are
assigned to more than one sub-project, and he wants to be
able to centrally maintain the resource allocation). Is
this the reason they cannot be viewed on the server?

I also believe assigning the resources within the
subprojects is unacceptable to the project manager. So,
if you are aware of a way to have a shared resource pool
across several sub-projects, while allowing resources to
log on to the server to view all their assignments across
all sub-projects, please let me know :)

Can enterprise resource features be used to help solve the
problem? If so, what do I have to do on my computer to
help solve the problem?

Michael:

The fact that your post is in this particular group tells us that you're
using an Enterprise Configuration. Therefore, that would be anyone's
assumption in answering your posts. With that said and the additional
information provided, it would seem that your company is at square one with
its understanding of the technology. My best advice to you is to download
the training materials available at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325846

You might also consider obtaining a copy of my book and make sure that you
click on the link at the bottom of the Administrator home page which takes
you to the EIF, that describes the steps necessary to deploy Project Server.
