problems w/2003 client and 2002 server

Hi,

I have project 2002 server and recently updated my client
to 2003 pro.
Since the update I am not able to open the enterprise
global template (it is greyed out) and if i try to open a
project from the server as r/w with the checkout button
selected, it opens the file but as read only.

it appears that 2003 Pro does not recognize that i am an
admin. however, if i use web access i do have access to
admin functions.

Am i missing something stupid or does anyone have any
insite into this problem?

TIA
Jeff

Hey Jeff,

You are missing a little step when using Project Professional 2003 with
Project Server 2002. You should get a dialog message the first time you
attempt to open anything enterprise from a 2002 database.

There is an upgrade script available to get the database aware of the new
columes available in 2003. Search on Microsoft's website, or click on the
help button on the dialog that you get.

This happens because Project Server 2002 database does not contain the
additional fields that are now available with Project Professional 2003.

Running this upgrade script will not affect anything, just allow Project
Professional 2003 machines to connect.

Hope this helps,
Matt S.

Hi Matt,
I dont get any dialog message it just opens the file read
only. I will search for the upgrade script and see if that
is the problem.
thanks,
Jeff

It appears that I do not have alter table and create
table privileges (thus no dialog), I will get w/my system
admin.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Jeff

You might want to also confirm that you have permission to open Enterprise
projects, etc...

Now in regards to the dialog that appears when connecting to a Project
Server 2002 database, if someone selects to never show this message again,
then you won't ever see it until you reinstall the client application. But we
shouldn't have to worry, since the problem is the same no matter what.

I was able to locate the script to resolve the problem:

Thanks very much for the link, finding stuff at microsoft
is still hit or miss for me.
I am not sure why the dialog doesnt show up. I am the
project 2002 administrator but we have someone else who
installed the sql db so i am going to ask him to upgrade
the db.
I am hoping for a lot of bug fixes in 2003 but then again
i am also hoping to win the lotto :)

Jeff

No problem Jeff, glad I could help.

Eventhough it's a public script and all, make sure you test everything out
before you apply it to production. Better be safe then sorry I always say.

Project is it's own beast, and it's difficult to find related information
regarding Project on Microsoft's site. That's the plus with these
newsgroups. I heard it on a daily basis when I worked for the Support
Group at Microsoft for this product.

Try using Google for you searches, I'm always able to find stuff that way.

Good luck,
