Problems with Embedded word picture objects

I have a 10 page document with a lot of word picture objects. Every 5 or so
edits of any of these pictures corrupts them. A number of things happen:

- Conversion of word picture object into picture
- Object is drawn ok but is uneditable. When I right click on the picture,
on the menu it says 'Object' instead of 'Picture Object' and selecting that
option just gives object corrupt or unavailable.
- Word crashes. The restored files often have the problems above.

I've searched the web and I don't have any Norton firewall/virus checkers
etc. installed. I've disabled the firewall on my machine and don't have any
virus checkers running.

Any help appreciated.
