Problems with mail merge

I use mail merge for a monthly letter, I have about 50 couples that live
common law and therefore have different last names. Mail merge only adds one
name to the address block, but adds both first and last names to the greeting
block. This forces me to merge these names seperate from the others and then
requires me to manually adjust every letter....very time consuming. I have
tried different merge options for the greeting names but I haven't found one
that does it right. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Don't use any pre-defined address blocks. Construct your own. If you need
help on doing so, ask in Word's mail merge group or consult one of the many
very helpful sites the Word MVP's maintain such as:
