problems with picture formatting in Word

when I put pictures into word I cannot resize or edit them. When I try to
select a picture I get the placeholder little squares (the ones in the
corners and in the middle of the lines), but no resizing handles and I can't
move pictures about. Both the format object and format picture options are
greyed out on the 'format' toolbar menu.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?MTAxd29tYmxl?=,

corners and in the middle of the lines), but no resizing handles and I can't
move pictures about. Both the format object and format picture options are

Which version of Word? What commands do you use to insert the pictures? Has any
kind of protection been applied to the document? Was there any text in the
document before you tried inserting the pictures?

If you use the Format command, can you resize the picture via the dialog box?

Is this happening only in one document, or in many documents?

Thanks for the response. It's Word 2003. I've actually solved the problem
now. Discovered that I'd left the 'picture placeholders' ticked in the view
tab of the options menu on the 'tools' drop down menu - I thought I'd already
checked that it wasn't on, so I'm feeling rather foolish now...
