problems with saving II: A cure?

Hi All,

Maybe I've found a little cure for the "too many files are open -word
won't save"-bug. I tried a lot today (incl. disk permission repair,
copy - paste without the last paragraph, disenable fast save and so
on) but nothing worked. Then I took a last try: SELECT THE WHOLE TEXT,
then TOOLS --> LANGUAGE and mark the whole selected text with only ONE
language (e.g. german) (Thats no cure for you Thomas, I know, but at
least we are little step further... I checked in the Terminal and
there weren't any lines which you described earlier (like 1000 times
opening xx dictionary). Before I did my Language thing I experienced
the same as you did in the Terminal-text!). That worked, at least for
today. I'll let you know what will happen tomorrow (*knock on wood*).

thanks for reading!

Hi Florian:

Yes, I agree that is likely.

The problem is that word gets more files open than the Operating System will
allow.

If you mark the text with only one language, you will then close all the
other language spelling and grammar resources, which will free up a lot of
available file handles.

Cheers

Hi All!

Thanks for answering John!

Up until now, everything went fine. I have switched off spell check
(as well as Fast save :) ) and only use the hyphenation tool. The
problem didn''t show up anymore as well as the 1000 lines of opening a
dictionary in the Terminal were gone. I think I'll leave it like that
and hope the bug finally disappeared. But it's quite a pity that it
seems one can't mark different languages in Word. However, I''m
really glad it seems to be fixed now.

But John, if your sources tell you a better cure than this, please let
us know!

btw: I read you were talking about Office 11. Is this gonna be a new
Mac Version?

Cheers from Switzerland to the other end of the World!

The *important* part of the cure is to switch ON "Always create backup
copy". Switching OFF Fast Saves does nothing: but switching on "Always
create backup copy" changes the way Word handles document files. It also
automatically switches off Fast Saves.

You should understand that Fast Saves is not useful on a modern computer:
the saves are no faster, but the crashes certainly are.

Yes, there will be a new version of Word on the Mac. I have no idea whether
it is to be called Word 11 or something else, nor do I know when it will be
available. You need to understand that those who know such details are not
allowed to tell us, and those who tell us don't know :)

Hi John!

Thanks a lot for your help! Up until now the bug seems to have gone.
And I won't change anything in my preferences until there may be a new
version :)

Thanks again! Really, you do a great job in here and I think a lot of
people are very grateful (or at least they should be!)!

All my best to you!
