Product codes

I reciently purchased an older PC with win 98 installed along with other
microsoft software. I need to reformat the hard drive and reinstall all
software. Unfortunately I do not have the product codes for any of the
software. How can I get the codes, or reinstall the Microsoft products?

The product codes won't help you if you don't have the original
software CDs or disks to reinstall from. If you purchase legal
copies of the software, then you will have both the product keys
and the installation media.

Legally the person who sold you the computer should have given you that
information as well as the disks. Either the seller did not know that or no
longer has that info. If the latter is the case, if you reformat you'll end
up with a paperweight.

Depending on the system you purchased I'd suggest looking into getting a
copy of Win XP and whatever application software you want. The problem with
that is you end up dumping even *more* money into a used computer that will
last for how long? My system was Win 98 when I first got it but I was able
to get a great deal on the Microsoft software (full version, not OEM) thanks
to a former employer. If not for that, I'd be using Win 98 with Office 2000.

Weigh your choices carefully. The price of new computers has come down a bit
over the years.
