Product Key Invalid

I bought the student edition in 2007. Used it on my personal laptop until I
bought a new one with vista in 2008. That laptop died this past June, so when
I bought my third laptop, the product key is invalid even though I've used it
on my previous other two laptops. Am I missing something? I don't want to
have to buy this again..

Did you first uninstall any trial version of office that came preinstalled
together with the activation assistant, then reboot prior to installing from
cd?
