There no way to tell how many systems that license is tied to. At some point
you may have to use telephone activation. Just explain the situation at that
point.

May I suggest that you just install it and also try to activate it over
Internet. If it fails, you should get a toll-free phone number on the
screen for your nearest Microsoft Office. You need to phone them
(during normal office hours in your country) and explain to them without
losing your temper or using any abusive language. They are very helpful
and most of the time they will activate the product for you.

Hope this helps.

Why would anyone lose their temper or use abusive language when they're
forced to prove they paid for something before they can use it?

I can think of many situations where you are forced to provide evidence of
payment before taking advantage of something. Ever try boarding an airplane
without a boarding pass?

If MS wants to see my receipt, they can get a court order and come and
demand to see it. We are talking about MS entering MY space, not me
entering theirs.

But it's their software, not yours. Read your license - you are granted a
license to use, not ownership.

I bought a good license and if they want proof that it's good, they can
get a court to order that I provide the receipt for buying the license.
Curious, though, not one single store says they sell licenses but
software. Bait and switch comes to mind.

Life is like that. In UK one is required to prove their identity before
they can be employed or to open a bank account. Microsoft is entitled
to protect its intellectual property bearing in mind they are running a
multi-billion pound business employing thousands of people [directly]
all over the world and millions indirectly by giving them the
opportunity to provide a service of supporting Microsoft products.

Hope this helps.

You are entering their space by asking them to activate the product for
which you may or may not have paid for it [because there is no evidence
without a receipt]. If you think MS is abusing your rights then YOU
TAKE THEM TO COURT. They have no obligation to activate the product
unless you comply with their terms and conditions.

Hope this helps.

They don't have to go to the court. They can refuse to activate the
product unless you abide by their terms and conditions of use, and so
the obligation is upon you to go to court if you want to continue use of
the said product. You can, of course, go to the court to force MS to
activate the product but I doubt if you have the means to do so. You
can always use alternative products which requires no activation.

I paid for the product. Why should I have to prove that? If they doubt I
paid for it, they need to go to court to see my receipt.

Bad analogy, so, not, it doesn't "help". To buy something, I don't need
to prove who I am. All I need to do is fork out the cash and it's mine.
