Programmatically creating a linked table

I am having trouble linking to a SQL2000 database. This particular database
has hundreds of tables and keeps timing out when I try to link tables. I am
not certain, but I think it is timing out while retrieving the list of table
objects to choose to link to. I was wondering if I could skip that and just
create the linked tables programmatically in some way? I know the server and
database, and users will be connecting via Integrated Security, so I think
I'd just have to programmatically create the tables and/or refresh the
link(s) based on the current user?

Right now I have had to workaround by using DTS to get the data into a
separate Access database ... which is fine for now but will not be acceptable
within a week or so.
