Project 2003 and 2007

Experience speaking here -- Before installing 2007, make sure your 2003 is
completely up to date with the SP2, etc.

When happened to me was this. I had 03 Standard and 07 Prof on the same
machine. I had need to go back and upgrade 03 Standard to 03 Professional.
When I did this, the 07 Prof install became corrupted.

No real problem, I ran the 07 Prof re-install and it did the repair just
fine. It will save you 30 minutes to have your 03 config solid prior to
proceeding with 07. Both products work very well on my laptop.

Project 2003 and 2007 will play nicely together. However, in my
experience, when you add Office 2007 (Enterprise, in my case) the 2007
applications always go to the setup screen when you start it. I found
this highly annoying, and after six weeks, three different PC's and MS
telling me this should not occur, I migrated totally to Project 2007.
Since I run my own project consulting business, its not a big deal. I
had the beta of the '07 programs.

Hope your experience is better than mine. If you can, take the plunge
totally into '07.

Regards,
CM

A little off topic, but this may helpful to Scott.

here is another article describing how to unistall the Microsoft
Project2007 Beta. Although not related to your problem, it provides
procedural steps that might be adaptable.

Only to to add that Project 2003 SP2 is not capable of opening 'native' file
format from Project 2007. So in order to share or open the file in Project
2000-2003 it's necessary to save the file as this file format in Project
2007. Please also note that new features, specific to Project 2007 can be
lost or converted to Project 2003 features on 'down' conversion
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project/HA010450201033.aspx).

Project 2003 SP3 will add the capability of opening Project 2007 file
format. It will be available later this year
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project/HA010450201033.aspx).

Thanks!

Thanks everyone, this was very helpful. We are currently running Project
Server 2003 and wish to do a test run of Project Server 2007 to see if it
will help our productivity. I know that neither Project 2003 nor 2007 works
with the other server and I didn't want to have to find spare desktops for
testing. At least on the desktop side, a few of us can test it first.

Just to remind Jan that MS has finally acknowedged that there are problems
with the 'save as' 2003 action. Files saved that way are often (in my case
never) readable by 2003 users.

I belelive MS made a big mistake by not allowing 2007 to work with 2003 mpp
files in a 'compatibiltiy mode', like MS Word 2007 is able to do. In fact I
now need to reinstall 2003 because I will be doing schedules for an outfit
that does not plan toupgrade ot 2007 any time soon.

Bad judgement MS.
