We have a file created with MS Project 2003 which weighs in at about
150M that opens fine in MS Office 2003.

However, when attempting to opening with Project 2007, it crashes...

I get this dialog while opening with 2007 but not 2003...
The Resource is assigned outside the original dates for task 16035 PFM Bench Tests in project ABI_PTM Houts_CDR Final 0923ABI PTM Implimentation Detail Schedul".

The duration of this fixed-duration task will change to accommodate the resource assignment.

and then Project appears to continue to load, begins to display the
file, but the hourglass remains and eventually the MS Error Reporting
Tool pops up with some of the following information.

I thought we were supposed to get some sort of a response within one
business day with our TechNet subscription. It's been a business week...

Hi Chris,

I think you misunderstand where you've posted your question. This
is a newsgroup where questions posted are answered by volunteers in
our spare time. No one here is an employee of Microsoft, nor there
any guarantees of getting your post answered. Any performance
agreement you have with Microsoft is not through this newsgroup, I
would image it's through a technical support incident. Posting to
this newsgroup did not open a support incident through Microsoft.

That being said, what is the status of the task in question? If you
open in Project 2003, is it a fixed duration task with a resource
assigned who may have non-working time in his/her calendar which
does not allow the work to be completed within the fixed duration?
If you delete the task in question on a copy of the file, can you
open it in 2007? What service pack and updates do you have
installed to Project 2003 and Project 2007? It's possible your
project 2003 file is corrupted. Have you tried any of the fixes
suggested at FAQ 43 at:
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Does this happen on all PCs attempting to open the file?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I realize that, we have an EA which is *SUPPOSED* to include support,
but it seems that the "Unlimited Web Support Incidents" only covers
server products, not the desktop/end-user products.

That said, from our TechNet benefits page.
Managed Newsgroups

Which is what I was going on, and directs me to this NNTP server.

I am not sure. Project 2003 does not complain about it.

I will have to try that.
What service pack and updates do you have

Both Project 2003 and 2007 are both fully up to date
It's possible your
project 2003 file is corrupted.

We have similar suspicion but are curious why 2003 has no issues and
2007 initially appears to open it before nose-diving into the shallow end.

We are in the process of trying to get permission from both our vendor
(who provided the project file) and our contracting officer (as this
relates to a Government contract) to try and release the file to
Microsoft for analysis. But, we still need to figure out how we can OPEN
a support ticket with them on our Enterprise Agreement for Project
without being billed an additional $250...

I have tried several of the methods listed under item #43 resave the
file, save-as to a different file, save-as to a Project database, etc
Does this happen on all PCs attempting to open the file?

Yes, Fresh XP Installed
I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

Sorry, as I don't work for Microsoft, I really don't know anything
about that guarantee. This is not a MS "managed" newsgroup. It
runs on MS servers, but it is not managed or moderated. I believe
some of the other products are supported through forums which are
moderated and managed, but this newsgroup isn't one of those.

Check the status of the resource. Is he/she on vacation during the
duration? If you unassign the resource from 2003, can you open in
2007?
I will have to try that.

Let us know if that works.
Both Project 2003 and 2007 are both fully up to date

I assume with the Infrastructure update released in July?
