Project 2003 via Terminal Services problem - settings won't stick

Harry Sufehmi

We've got Project 2003 Server setup and clients have been successful
in using it with Project 2003 client and Web Access.

Then we were told that we'll try to deploy it on thin-client
architecture. We had numerous problems with Citrix, so we thought
we'll try it with Windows 2000 Terminal Services first.

However there's a problem where the settings won't stick in users (no
problem with administrators). Everytime a client logged in, we'll have
to enter the connection settings again, make the webserver trusted
again, and so on. Needless to say, this won't do with the users.

Does anyone have any idea on how to resolve this problem?

I've looked on support.microsoft.com, Technet, Google, this newsgroup,
etc - but no word regarding it at all.

I'll be thankful for any pointer regarding this problem.

Thanks!
Harry

This is likley an issue with how your Terminal services box is
configured. It is not persisting user edits to their profile.

That said I do not know how to fix it. :) I just know it is not an
issue with Project or Project Server. :)

You might try asking in the Terminal Services newsgroup.

Good Luck

Harry:

To add to Brian's excellent guidance, I see this happening in environments
where security policies do not allow users to access to Tools > Internet
Options > Security tab > Custom level. Even outside a TS environment, this
forces the users to make Project Server a trusted site every time they
logon. PITA!

Thanks for the reply Brian.
You're right, it was the problem with that Terminal Server. My guess
is because it's also the domain controller.

I setup another server, and Project 2003 works fine via Terminal
Services now.

Well, not straight away though - originally I installed W2K SP4 in
that box.
Project 2003 consistently gave me "SQL server error 53" message, just
like the one detailed here:

http://groups.google.com/[email protected]&rnum=4

So out of frustration I uninstalled SP4, put in SP3. And now
everything works!
What a pain - but I'm just happy that it's done :)

Thanks again !

You tell me... and I'm pretty sure this is the cause of my problem.
Basically a Domain Controller have much stricter Local Policy
implementation.
There are loads of them, and I just don't know which one(s) that are
the culprit. So to save time I just setup another box (well, VMware
guest machine to be exact - serious timesaver) and my problem's gone.

I also experience that "SQL server error 53" from time to time, but a
"Refresh" of the SQL server instance (or DB server restart) will clear
that problem for me.

I think you'll see me here again with other problem(s), but I'm very
happy to see that there's a community I can turn to for guidance.

Thanks!
