Project 2007 - Error Messages When Saving Files

R

Rowie

Hello All,

We have just upgraded from Project 2003 to Project 2007. Before we did this
I made sure we had SP3 for 2003 and SP1 for 2007. I also removed all
passwords (I work with several integrated plans within one large plan, there
are lots of different views and filters).

I have been working with 2007 files this morning but did not realise that by
simply hitting the Save button that my changes weren't being made.
Eventually I got an error message:
"Unexpected error occured during command execution.
Verify that all argument names & values are correct & are of the correct type
You may also have ran out of memory"

I can get around this by selecting File/Save As and clicking on the file
name each time but would rather fix the Save problem so that I don't lose my
work.

My files have also been crashing when I have been allocating resources?

Thanks in advance

Hi Rowie,

Are you working with a resource pool and master projects? If so,
it's possible that the project files have become corrupt over time.

On a copy of the file, try the suggestions at FAQ 43 at
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm and then see if things are better.
It may be necessary to rebuild any master projects (I assume this is
what you mean by "integrated plans".)

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Julie,

I work with a master project that has several plans integrated into it but
also work on stand alone plans and am receiving the same error messages.
Colleagues who have never have 2003 on their machines (only 2007) do not have
the same problems.

I have reverted back to working on 2003 but also have 2007 installed on my
machine so will try your suggestions on a copy of my plan/s.

Thanks again
Rowie

You're welcome for the assistance Rowie and thanks for the feedback.
Can you colleagues with Project 2007 open the same files you are
having trouble with? I don't have both 2003 and 2007 running on the
same machine but I know several other MVPs who do run multiple
Project versions installed to the same machine. To the best of my
knowledge, they have not have any difficulties.

Keep us posted on how you get along.

Hello nitaw,

Some additional information would be useful to help us assist.
What operating system?
What service packs do you have applied to Project 2007?
Are you working with server or stand alone?
Does this occur on every single project file or just specific files?
Are you using Norton Antivirus?
Are you using HP credential manager?
Is this a recent issue or has it been occurring for some time?
If it is recent, what other changes have been made to the
environment?
Can you reproduce this on other user's machines?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hello JulieS,

I have a user experiencing the same problem as Nitaw and Rowie. The
problem is intermittent thus difficult to know if it has been cured. I
was wondering if you have gain any further insight in to the potential
cause or found any workarounds.

Here is the information that you requested from Nitaw.

1. OS: Windows XP Pro SP3
2. MS Project Pro 2007 (12.0.6423.1000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000)
3. Saving a file to MSP Server
4. It only happens occasionally, can't tell yet if it is limited to
only certain files.
5. We are running McAfee Anti-Virus
6. No HP credential manager
7. This issue has been occurring for some time but not frequently, once
or twice a month maybe?
8. Right now the error is primarily occurring on a single user's
machine.

Thanks again for any suggestions that you can provide.
Regards,
Jim

Hello Jim,

As you are using Project in conjunction with Project Server, I
suggest re-posting your question to the Server newsgroup. When you
repost, please give details about what issue you are seeing. I had
to trace back to the techarena site to review the earlier postings
from Nitaw and Rowie. Your details below are superb -- but please
include the specific symptoms and problems you are seeing. This may
be related to problems with the Project Server.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I will repost your suggestion to the Server list. However, we've seen
this problem on and off over the past 2 to 3 years but we've only been
using server for the past year. I really do suspect that this is more a
problem with MS Project Desktop than with Server.

The problem really is difficult to characterize as it has not been
repeatable.

Thank You,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Are you seeing the 'unexpected error' as Nitaw says when you update
a task or the 'unexpected error' Rowie says when saving? Are you
saving to a network drive? Is it possible that the connection to
the network has been interrupted?
