Project Central Server 2000

I'm using Project 2000 and have installed Project Central Server 2000 so that
my team can keep upto date with how projects are progressing and to see what
tasks have been assigned to them. The problem I am having is that after
setting up the Project Central Server for mixed authentication and creating a
number of users they are not being updated with the assigned tasks. When I
assign a task in a particular project to a resource and check that the e-mail
address is correct there seem to be no problems. I then use the menu drop
down 'Team Status' which allows me create a workgroup e-mail for all or a
particular task. At this stage the spooler kicks in an the e-mail is then
sent to the Project Central Server. If the team member to whom I assigned
the task logs in there is no e-mail awaiting them nor is the assigned task
shown in their task list. After a little investigation I found that Project
was actually creating users on the Project Central Server using Wnidows NT
Authentication which would be fine if they would show up on the drop down
list on the initial login screen. To see if the e-mail and tasks were
hitting these accounts I merged an account I originaly setup with that of the
account which Project automaticaly created leaving the original intact. Now
when I login to the original account I can see the e-mail and tasks assigned.
It looks like you need to create the accounts using Windows NT
Authentication in the first instance, but when I do they do not register in
login drop down menu.

Anybody got any thoughts as to what is happening?

Before anybody says upgrade to Project Server 2003, we are a small company
with a tiny IT budget who just want to make use of what is available at no
cost. If it works and I can show benefits/time savings then my peers may
listen to the possibility of upgrading.
