Project Errors

Leon

I have just started to use project and I am ready to abandon the application all ready.

I have a dell optplex runn xp pro with 1GB memory. I have ALL updates for office and xp installed.

I can create a project, do anything I want except save it. As soon as I do the project becomes corrupt and unretrievable. This is true of simple project as well
as complex ones.

I have uninstalled project and reinstalled, installed and applied service patches, and a number of other solutions which failed miserably.

Any ideas?

Hi Leon,

Installing is not enough.
As long as you do not ACTIVATE the program with Microsoft (phone or web) it
is incomplete.

Hi Leon,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Unfortunately, you seem to have tried all the things I would have
recommended :( You could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. File
Bloat? - Might be Corruption. Bar success from that, it could be your CD is
faulty and I would contact Microsoft Support.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Can you give us more details on exactly what is happening please. It's very
difficult to diagnose the problem with nothing more to go on than "It's
broken." You say the project you try to save is corrupt and unretrievable.
Can you give us exactly what is happening, any error messages you're
getting, etc? Are these all created new projects, are you trying to open
and edit older files, or does it happen in both circumstances? If they are
older files, what version of Project created them? What version of Project
do you have? Have you installed Project locally on your workstation or are
you trying to run it off of a network install or through terminal services?
Are you saving to your local workstation's drive or are you saving to a
network location? Do you discover the file is corrupt when you try to save
it or when you try to re-open it?

We'll try to help but you've got to give us more to go on <grin>.

Hi all,

A customer of mine had exactly the same trouble before activating the SW.
That is why I suspect non-activation (a non-activated 2003 has flaws!)

I have activated the software with Microsoft.

The error is sort of general "Microsoft Project has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and the typical " Send Error Report or Don't Send".

I can create any project, the failure is when I try to open a project that I have already created. I have been sucessful in saving it as a 98 project and then reopening it, but that is not a solution.

I have attempted to run the debugger with little success as well.

The install was local only. I am working exclusively with 2003 projects that I have just created. I have also registered the product with Microsoft. Saving project to a 98 version seems to solve the problem, but I am really not interested in this approach.

Thanks

That's very strange - haven't encountered that before. Was there a
previous version of Project on that workstation before installing this one?
Did you deactivate your anti-virus software during the install?

Leon

I have reinstalled, repaired, and just about anything you can think of as an option. I have also verified that the virus protection was disabled during the installation.

I have discovered something else though, I can create a new project and import any of my existing projects into it and it will work. I just can not open an existing project.
