Project Groups / Filters

Lisam

Hi All, My company is a national company and we have just had the
different states come online with using our microsoft project and
project server for their particular projects. The problem being with
this is that when you go to open an existing project from Microsoft
Project 2003 there is a large amount of project files to look through
before you find the one that you need.

I have noticed that in the file -> open box there is a "groups" drop
down box. Is there a way of a) creating a group that you can save
your
project file to which directly relates to the project file name? For
eample if the project file name starts with NSW.... then you can have
a group that lists all projects that start with NSW?

b) Are you able to select this group from the
file -> open window to allow easy sorting of your project files?

If this isn't possible does anyone else have any other suggestions??

Hi Lisa,

Try posting on the server newsgroup as this one is closing down. Please see

Lisam --

In the future, please post your Project Server questions in the
microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup, as this newsgroup is shutting
down. To answer your question, the Group by pick list in the Open from
Project Server dialog allows users to group the list of projects based on
custom enterprise Project outline codes created by the Project Server
administrator. It definitely sounds like your organization needs some kind
of outline code upon which your PM's can group the projects and more easily
find the project they need. You will need to work with your Project Server
administrator to make this happen.

Because the Open dialog does not allow filtering, an alternate approach is
to use the Project Center page in PWA, which allows both grouping AND
filtering. From there your PM's can filter for a particular type of
project, such as one's with file names beginning with NWA, and can open the
project by clicking the row header to the left of the project name (DO NOT
click the name of the project) and then clicking the Open button. This
action will launch Project Professional, log the PM into Project Server, and
open the enterprise project for editing. Hope this helps.
