"Project Mgt" task?

Is it fairly common to have a "Project Mgt" task of some sort within
each project (if not specific line items for development procurement
plans, communication plans, etc)?

Please share if you would.

Hi Andy,

absolutely. PM'ing is part of every project ( or should be :) ) and as such
you should have the abillity to plan and track this time a PM is spending.
Remember at the end of the day you want to reflect reality to your project
schedule and reality is that PM's work on projects.

I actually always have a seperat Summary task called "Project Wide Tasks".
As part of this summary task I have Project Management time as a task, status
meetings as recurring tasks etc etc.
I hope this helps

In smaller projects where you know that you will spend let us say about 40%
of your time for a specific project during the whole project duration there
is a very simple way to create and maintain a reliable forecast for the PM
effort:

Create a task for PM, and create at the same level another task (summary
task) with all the execution sub-tasks. Set the PM task to fixed unit, not
effort driven and add the project manager with 40%. Go then to the Gantt
Chart, click on the duration field of the execution-summary task, copy, click
on the duration field of your PM task, and choose Edit->Paste Special->Paste
Link. When the end date of the execution task slips, your pm task increases
his duration and work automatically, which in general is realistic.

Hope that helps.
