Project opening and modification taking a Loooong time

We are running project 2007 with project server 2007 & EPM. Recently we got a
project which had not been created with our standard global template. the
project has about 8000 tasks and about 5 indent levels.
Now if you open the project up whilst not coneccted to locally it works fine
opens quickly updates of progress etc are almost instantaneous. If you are
connected to EPM opening the same project then takes about 5 minutes to open
and any update you do takes about the same time for each update.
All other projects are working just fine with 5000 + tasks, its just this one.
Has anybody got any ideas or experienced similar issues.
