Project Pro / Project Server communication

I seem to be having, what I hope is, a small problem with my Project
Pro 2003 and Project Server 2002 communication. I'm hoping some kind
soul can point me in the right direction.

When I enter my project server URL under 'Project Server Accounts' and
do a 'Test connection' I get an error message stating that I don't
have the right authentication to access the project server web site.
I try using both Windows and Project Server authentication and both
report the same problem. I make sure I enter a valid username into
the appropriate dialogue box.

Here's what I think the problem is, although I don't know how to solve
it.

When I enter my main SharePoint web server address into IE on a remote
PC (http://<servername>) I get an immediate connection to the
SharePoint Web page. No problem. However, when I add the '/project
server' to the address (http://<servername>/projectserver) I get a pop
up Windows authentication window to which I have to enter a valid
Widows username/password. Once that is accepted I get the project
server web page come up with its own logon screen (Welcome to
Microsoft Project Server. Please log on.). I use a Project Server
username/password I created and happily log on.

I think that it is that first Windows authentication popup that is
causing Project Pro to report an error because it does not have the
ability to negotiate the Windows authentication. Of course, I could
be quite wrong there.

If this is the case, then what is pumping out the Windows logon popup
and how does one disable it ? And if that is not the case what else
could be stopping Project Pro from communicating wit Project Server ?

Thanks for listening (well reading) and thanks for any useful
pointers.

Gary:

You need to enable Anonymous Access to the Project Server virtual directory.

Thanks, I have done that and am able to succesfully
connect to the server via Project Pro. However I still
get that Windows logon prompt popping up when I go to
http://<Servername>/projectserver via IE or when logging
in to Server through Project Pro. Is there anyway that
this can be disabled ? (I am running in a mixed
Windows/Linux environment and using Windows
authentication, and being part of a common domain, for all
users is not an option.

Thanks to you and the group for continued help.

Gary:

How about the default web site? Do you have anonymous access enabled there?
Also, look at your browser settings: Under custom security level in the
trusted sites zone (where you have added your Project Server site) make sure
that under User Authentication, that you have selected logon with your
current credentials, rather than prompt. Project and PWA observe the
security settings in the browser.

Keep in mind that the logon prompts are occurring because of server/browser
settings and have nothing to do with Project Server.

Thanks for the continued support Gary.

I have gone through what you have suggested, re-checking
my configurations.

On the server that runs Project Server I use IIS Manager
to look at my directory security. Under
IIS/<servername>/Web Sites there is listed 'Default Web
Site'. Right clicking on this to bring up properties and
choosing 'Directory Security' then selecting A&AC, Edit, I
see that I have anonymous access enabled with the user
name set to IUSR_...

Also in IIS manager, under the Default Web Site, there is
ProjectServer, its directory security settings are the
same as above.

On the client side, from where I run IE, I check the IE
security settings and they are as you suggest that is, the
URL for my project server is a trusted site and the logon
is set to 'auto. logon with current usernae and password'.

The symptoms are still the same. From IE, when I go to
http://<servername> I get my SP T S web page no problem,
but when I add /projectserver up pops that logon prompt.

I will keep trying and playing and hopefully given enough
time trying random cfgs I will hit the right one !

Thanks,

Gary

Then the problem is with security on one of the dlls. Which one? I'd need to
see your server.
