Project Server 2003 install/config question

G

Guy Dillen

I want to install Project Server 2003 on my new server (in a small
environment). However, i have the following questions:

1. Do I need a domain with Active Directory, or can i install on a Workgroup
server?
2. Do I need Microsoft Exchange to be installed? If not, since i have POP3
mail, how can i use this as mail in Project Server 2003?

Thanks,
Guy

Hey Guy,

1. No, you don't need to be in an active directory configuration... however,
the user will have to have a workgroup account created on the machine that
Project Server is installed on to use for PWA. However, you will encounter a
problem using Project Professional because Project Pro, when configured for
Windows Authentication, can only use the credentials of the user currently
logged onto the local machine. If you were going to install Project Server
in a workgroup environment, I would personally strongly recommend that you
use Project Authentication.

2. No, you don't need to have Exchange installed, but you cannot use POP3
either - POP3 is an incoming mail prototcol. You need to use an SMTP server,
be it the server that is included in IIS or a third-party server.

Hope I helped!

Steve,

Thx for your help.

1. I suppose Project Authentication is an installation option during Project
Server?
2. Of course i meant SMTP server :), but as you said i can use the smtp
server of my ISP?

regards,
Guy

1. You configure this in PWA under Admin > Manage Security > User
Authentication.

2. Just wanted to make sure, but I wouldn't recommend using your ISP's SMTP
server. They may have a BIG problem with this. Better to use the SMTP
server portion of IIS on the server you're installing Project Server on, and
setup the access options so only that machine can send mail.
