Project Server 2007 MSDN Licenses and Professional CALS

I

I have an MSDN subscription at my company and am able to download Project
Server 2007 and Project Pro 2007.

Does this (interms of licensing) enable me to set up my Project Server and
use my Project Pro as a CAL to access the server?

If I understand MSDN licensing correctly I would need full licenses on the
server for the operating system and SQL database but as I have Premium MSDN
subscription I can use Project Server and Pro from the download.

There are 43 other MSDN subscriptions at the company so could each one of
these also download Project Pro and use it as a CAL to Server 2007?

Thanks,
Ian

Technically, that will be no problem.
But keep in mind that MSDN licenses are for testing purposes only! You are not allowed to use MSDN licenses in a production environment.
So if you want to setup Project Server in your production environment, you'll need to purchase different licenses. You can use the MSDN licenses for your test/dev/acceptance environment.

At least, that's how I understand MSDN licensing. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the quick reply Hans.

From the MSDN web site I see the following:

"If you have an MSDN Premium subscription, you can also install and use one
copy of certain desktop applications on one device for any purpose."

There is a list of applications that follows including Project Standard and
it does say "desktop" but why would my subscription also allow me to download
Project Server and Professional? (For example, mine is a Visual Studio
Development Premium subscription so the download link for the Testing module
is greyed out).

I can understand the use of things like Visual Studio in a development area,
for example if you have a SQL database MSDN licence you can design and test
your software but then when you release it to live you need the full SQL
licence, but how does that relate to something like Project? Depending on
your view point a project will always be "in development" until it goes live
and at that point you no longer MSProject..!

A bit of a grey area I think and would like to hear from anyone who has
attempted to use an MSDN licensed Project Server with Project Professional
CALS.

Thanks again!

Ian, I would check this with Microsoft directly. The licensing is quite
complicated and you do want to get this right.
Technically speaking there is no reason why you cant use it for testing
purpose, but my gut feeling tells me that you cant use it for your production
environment, unless you are a Microsoft Partner which gives you some license
to use.
If you double check it with Microsoft you will be on the save site
Hope this helps

Hi Ian, Just my 2p worth....

if the MSDN licence does say ...

"If you have an MSDN Premium subscription, you can also install and use one
copy of certain desktop applications on one device for any purpose." then
assuming Project Professional (not standard) is on the list then clearly you
can use it in a non-prodn environment. This is one of the benefits of MSDN
Premium. The only major difference between pro and standard is pro includes
a Project Server CAL (and can connect to project server) - so we could assume
your other 43 users are licenced to use the server too.

However, Project Server is NOT a desktop application, and neither is SQL,
nor windows server, so you'll need to buy those.

Do let us know if Project Pro is part of the office suite you can use.
