Project Server Documents

I'm finding that when I double click on a file that it opens the file without
automatically checking it out. Is there a way that I can turn on the
checkout automatically?

To the best of my knowledge, the process of checking out a document in the
Documents area of PWA is a manual process. If you hover your mouse point
over the desired document in the documents, you will see a drop down list
arrow to the right of the document name, and if you click the drop down list
arrow, you can select the Check Out option. If you have already opened the
document for editing, you can click File - Check Out in application.
Checking out a document prevents anyone else from editing the document while
you have it checked out. Hope this helps.

OK next question is... once I have checked out the file, and I click save and
close, I'm getting two different results. on one machine when I close a
saved checked out file, it promps me for the description of the change. On
the other maching if I save a check out file and close it, it does not prompt
me until I use the pull down menu to check in the file.

Do you know what causes the difference between the two machines?

The system automatically displays the Check In dialog when you close the
file if you opened the document first and then checked out the document from
the File menu. The dialog does not display if you checked out the document
first and then opened it for editing. Does that explain the behavior?

OK.. i've looked into this with greater detail. The one machine has word
2000 and when you click on the document it allows you to view the document in
a browser not word. With in word the checkout option is not on the file menu
and yes you have to check it in separately.

The other machine has word 2003 and when you click on the document it
naturally opens in word. The check in check out features are more automated
than in word 2000.

The other problem we found in word 2000 is when you click the file and get
the brower view, the view does not show the lastest version. It only shows
the first version of the document. Any thoughts on why?

I believe the problem is with using Word 2000. Is there any way you could
get everyone upgraded to Word 2003 to eliminate these problems?

Bill:

Word 2002 (XP) is the only version fully compatible with Project Server 2002
and STS
Word 2003 is the only version fully compatible with Project Server 2003 and
WSS

You will experience various degrees of degradation and loss of features
depending on the version and SP level of Word 2000
