Project Server - "The file could not be opened"

Chris Green

I have upload a project to Project Server 2007...

When I go to open it from Office Project Pro 2007 from the Server I get a
"The file could not be opened". The project is there on the server. In
Project Center, I try to open the project from there and nothing comes up.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

You say you uploaded the project?
Do you have the required rights to manage it?
Check out your settings if you can.

Let me know.

Chris,

Do you have other plans on the system? Are they giving you the same issue?
If you don't have other plans try this.
Create a new project with three or four tasks under it.
Save it to the server and publish it.
Open that project from the server.

The reason I suggest this is that I have had this problem “under beta†as
well. I am still unsure as to the reason but it appears there was something
in the project name or a task name that was causing a misread so the project
would never complete its download to my PC. I recreated the project plan and
it worked fine though, I did remove all special charters from tasks and from
the project name. In my case there were several "-" characters and some open
and close "(" ")" in the tasks.

Although these characters are "supposed" to be allowed it did seem to clear
up my issues when testing.

I hope that helps.

Scott,

So I go home last night...

Fire up project on my laptop... (my problem is project on my work comp)
Login into the Project Server...

Opened the Project with no problems. Made changes and check the project
back in. Still no problems.

Amazing!

The problem must lie with in my workstation at work. I guess I will
reinstall project to see if that resolves it.

Thanks for your responses...

Hi,

Do you have Norton or MacAfee AV? Not sure what culprits there might be in
MacAfee, but in Nortons disable the Office plug in and see what happens.
Your AV software on the Exchange server should catch all Office viruses
better then Nortons so you do not need Norton Office Plug in. You will also
see a performance improvement as well!

HOLY SMOKES!

Rod - you are the man....

That was my problem. I have Norton Antivirus 2006 - after I found that
option - Turn Off Office Plugin, it worked

My Project opens from the server... Ya!

Amazing!

Thanks,

Mauro -- What Virus software are you running...
This is how I found out how to turn off the plugin for norton

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329820

I tried turning off everything in norton and it still did not work. Once I
unchecked the office plugin -- none of the other security mattered.
