Hello Juliana,

I believe questions about moving tasks, breaking links, etc. are from
the Planning Wizard. The options for the planning wizard are
controlled through Tools > Options, General tab. If you selected the
"Don't tell me about this again" checkbox, the option "Advice about
scheduling" is likely disabled.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Juliana,
The option is in Project Professional. Open the Tools Menu. Select
Options. Click the General tab. There is a section named "Planning
Wizard" with check boxes. If all of the options are checked, you
should see the scheduling message.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Juliana,

In order for the option to be enabled, it has to be clearly checked.
Click in the options until there is clearly a check mark there.
Sometimes the check box will be grey -- neither fully disabled, nor
fully enabled.

Hello Juliana,

You're welcome for the help. Just to be sure, I assume you are *not*
seeing the prompt pop up asking about whether you wish to link tasks
when you either enter dates or drag bars around in the Gantt view --
is that correct? And you want to see the prompt? What are you doing
to attempt to trigger the prompt?

Hey Julie!

Yes! I wanna see that prompt pop up.
WHen I insert a new task, for example, I assume that this prompt pop
up appear when I try to link this new task with another, for examplo,
to alert me that the link between tasks might change after that.

Hello Juliana,

The prompt will only pop up if you *don't* link the task and try to
either enter a start date for the new task which is close to the
finish date of the task above, or if you try to drag the task in the
Gantt chart view until it is close to the finish of the task above.

Be aware that by default, if you insert a new task between two tasks
that are linked in a Finish to Start relationship, Project will
automatically link them, so that may be why you aren't seeing the
prompt -- they are already linked. I recommend that the option
"Autolink inserted or moved tasks" on the Schedule tab of the Options
dialog box be shut off. Then when you insert a new task -- it will
never link and it's up to you to decide what you want to do.

Try this, create a simple project with two tasks. Do not link the two
tasks. Drag the Gantt bar for the second task until it is close to
the end of the first task -- does the prompt appear?

Hi Juliana,

Are the settings on the project manager's PC the same as yours?
Autolink inserted or moved tasks is off and the planning wizard
options are all on?

Hey Juliana,

I hate to say it -- me too. Have you tried altering the settings to
enable, then exit Project? Then try with a brand new project file?
Are you both using the same operating system?

Julie

Sorry Juliana, I'm completely stumped. As far as I know, the prompt
is controlled through the settings for the Planning Wizard -- which
are global settings -- they don't change from project to project file
like some of the other settings do. I can't come up with * any
reason* why the with exact same settings on one PC should behave one
way and another should behave another. I assume you have the same
Project service pack on both installations?

J

Juliana Giorni

Yes... also the same sp!
the other project manager have configured his pc and project based on
my configurations.
We're trying to do more tests (he isn't here at the office right now
and we're trying this remotly)

Any other ideas?

Hey Juliana,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm sorry -- I can't come up with
anything that would account for the differences. If you are both
using the same release, same SP of project, there is nothing else
obvious that I can suggest. Project 2003 is up to SP-3, Project 2007
SP-1 has just been released. Ensure you are all running the latest
service pack.

If possible, I would go step by step through each of the options and
see if there are any differences between your installation and the
project manager's installation. Try Help> Detect and Repair to see if
things change -- and I would most likely choose the Option "Discard my
customized settings....."

I am not a server guru and I don't believe that connection to a server
(Connection state) has anything to do with that option, but I would
want to make sure you are comparing accurately. Sorry -- no other
suggestions. Perhaps someone else has something to suggestion that I
am overlooking.

Julie
