Prompted to save templ. upon doc closure (*any* templ. not just No

Upon closing a document, Word 2003 is prompting a colleague's computer to
also save the template with which the doc is associated. This occurs with
*any* template, not just the Normal template.

I have reviewed KB 291352 -- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291352; the
problem persists. I've also deleted the user's Normal template and replaced
it with a fresh one; no joy.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tools, Options, Save, uncheck the "Prompt to save Normal template" box.
FYI, under normal circumstances (ie not forced by a macro) Word will always
"open" the Normal.dot before opening any other template.
Hope this helps

Thank you for you response, Dean. Unfortunately, we have already unchecked
the "Prompt to save Normal template" box; that did not solve the problem.
Additionally, it does not matter which template is used; the problem appears
to affect any template used, not just the Normal template.

This is not advisable, as it merely gives Word permission to save Normal.dot
without asking you.

Disabling the Prompt to Save Normal is a BAD idea: all it achieves is
masking an underlying problem.

Something is making Word dirty every document you open thus prompting to
save changes to the template. This is frequently a badly written add-in. Try
starting Word in Safe Mode, open a document and then close it without making
any changes to see if it prompts then.

From Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word starts in its default install condition bypassing all
customizations, add-ins, macros, etc. If you can now open and close a
document without the prompt, it virtually proves that it is a bad add-in.

Terry,

Thank you for your response. We tried opening Word with your instructions
below, and, sure enough, the problem went away. However, there are no add-ins
installed on the computer. There are several macros; however, they are
extremely old and exist in many templates used by other staff who do not have
this problem.

Any other suggestions before we try re-installing the software?

Thanks again,

-Hans

Reinstalling will make no difference as by starting in Safe Mode you have
proved that Word is fine. The problem is something third party. One or more
sources may be causing this.

Usually, it is an add-in template (in the Word Startup folder), an
incompatible macro installed (either home created or from third party
application), Antivirus plug-in, com add-in or even printer driver. Try
checking out the following FAQ which may help you locate the problem but be
assured this is not a Word problem but something outside Word causing the
problem. Norton AV, Paperport, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Bluetooth drivers, PDA
sync utilities are a few examples that may cause this problem.

See the following FAQ which may help diagnosing this problem.
