Protect sheet problem specific to mac

I am running into a problem where I want to protect only certain cells
(contents) in a worksheet and allow formatting. There are three
options in excel mac protect contents, objects, scenarios...I am only
clicking protect contents and its not allowing me to format. (I have
already unlocked all cells)
