"Protecting a file"

I am new to publisher. I created an agency newsletter using a "newsletter"
template in publisher. All the employees have publisher on their computers.
I intend to e-mail th newsletter to them. How do I finalize the product
(lock it, and convert it from a "template" to a "final product". I am sure I
am just missing some simple step.

If you do in fact generate a new Publisher file based on an actual template,
rather than opening & editing the template itself, it will be saved as a
Publisher file unless you specify otherwise in the Save As dislog under Save
As Type. The program doesn't offer any way to "lock" the output. Your best
bet is to use Adobe Acrobat (or a capable alternative) to create a PDF &
distribute that. Any form of Publisher-formatted output can be opened for
editing by Publisher - or by another appropriate program if saved as some
other format. Even PDFs offer no iron-clad guarantee.

If you do convert the documents to PDF you have different levels of security
that can be defined. It is true that there are tools available to unlock a
locked PDF there are other methods to securing the content depending on the
level of security that is needed. For most applications the built in
permissions are quite sufficient to prevent people from extracting the
content in one form or another. All tools that read and write Adobe PDF are
supposed to honor document security settings. Layer that will digital
signatures and certification you have a pretty robust way of protecting the
content.

But like I said, using the basic document security settings for preventing
the extraction and changing of the contents is already there and quite
functional for most intended applications like your newsletter. For that
matter, most people don't have the editing tools to edit a PDF even if it is
unlocked.
