Publisher cannot open the file

E

Elayne

I create a monthly newsletter using Publisher 2007. After installing an
update, my computer would not function properly, so I did a restore to the
point just before the update (created by the installation program). Now
publisher will not open the saved newsletters, giving me a dialogue box that
says 'Publisher cannot open the file.' Publisher will open other saved files,
including several that are incorporated into the newsletter (ads). When I
copy the files to a memory stick and try to open them on another computer
(mine, also running Office 2007), the files open. I have tried opening the
files on the second computer, saving them to another memory stick then trying
to open them again on the first computer, I get the same "cannot open"
comment. Why is publisher saying it cannot open the files on the computer
they were created on?

This hotfix says it is to fix a problem created once Office service pack 2
has been installed - this installation failed when it tried on my computer -
will this fix still work? Also, it only happens with some files, while others
still work fine...again, is this the correct fix for the problem?

Thanks,
Elayne

Was the update you installed and subsequently
reverted from 'Office SP2'? If it was...you might
try reinstalling it and then run the fix.

Good luck.

Not 100 per cent sure, but I don't think so...SP2 has been trying to install
for a while and continually fails. Any idea why this is?

Why...I don't know.

Just to clarify...are you talking about Office SP2 or
Windows Vista SP2?

Might be worth a try to download Office SP2 to your
desktop and install from there.

The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2)
http://tinyurl.com/cfq34v
or...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...18-79ea-46c6-8a81-9db49b4ab6e5&displaylang=en

FWIW...it's always best if you create a System Restore
point before installing software or updates.

Good luck.

Office SP2...and thanks for the advice - I do always create a restore point.
This problem began happening once I used the restore point to go back. Go
figure.

I am having this same problem, suddenly all my publisher files won't open but
2, the most recent and one from over 2 years ago. I tried this hotfix and it
did not solve this problem.

I installed the hotfix, and still get the same error (unable to ope
file). When I try to re-install the office-kb972566-fullfile-x86-gl
file I get a message stating "The update is already installed on thi
system". This is making me crazy.
Any further suggestions?

There is always the option to remove the service pack.

Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office suite
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954914/en-us

There is a registry fix that was posted before the service pack.
Error message when you try to open a publication in Publisher: "Publisher cannot
open the file" or "Publisher has detected a problem"
