Protecting Fields

Hello,

I was wondering if there was a way to prevent fields like text boxes
from being changed by certain users without using scripts. I was able
to use Data Validation and Rules but these seem to only prevent invalid
data from being sent after it has been entered. Sorry if this is a
very basic question published elsewhere but I've only been at this a
day or two.

BTW, if there is no scriptless solution, advice on how to do this with
scripts would also be appreciated.

Okay, found it, all I had to do was use conditional formatting.
