Protecting Office 97 Prof Ed during ME un/reinstall

During a residence move, I misplaced my legal CDs of Office 97 Professional Edition, although I still have the product ID #. It is running just fine on my vintage 1997 Gateway 300 MHz computer with Windows ME (upgraded from 95). However, I need to uninstall and reinstall ME, because of a problem in bringing up the Help and Support Center. I am afraid that during this process the Office 97 will quit working and I will have no way to reinstall it. Both Gateway and MS seem to be saying something like "Tough luck, beloved customer, we can't help you with a replacement CD." Is there a workaround method that I can use, perhaps by making some sort of backup to the Office 97 direct from my hard drive? Or what? I have an almost new HP computer using XP Professional that I can use as a tool, if helpful.

Office 97 is obsolete. You need to consider moving
up to Office 2003.

Windows ME is also obsolete. You need to consider
moving up to Windows XP.

It's obviously not obsolete for this user, if he's still using it and is
satisfied with it.

Thanks for your intent to help, and for the helpful comments by others. I
do not agree with you that Office 97 and Windows ME are obsolete, nor that I
need to upgrade. There are four working computers in my house. They range
in age from eight years down to two months. (There are two more not in use
in the garage.) Each computer is loaded with the appropriate legal software
for its normal purposes. I have been using MS products since the days of
DOS and MultiPlan., but I certainly do not intend to send unnecessary money
to MS at this point. If and when I really do need something else, I will
gladly buy it, but until then I will keep using what I have. I would
appreciate any help with the specific problem that I posed. Thanks again.

Or maybe you can find a friend with an Office 97 CD who will copy it for
you. That will work if you have the product key needed to install it.
You may be better off trying to fix the problem with ME if you don't want
to risk losing Office.
