pst error after migration from Outlook 03 back to 2k

I was having numerous problems with Office 03 and an online
application I teach, so I uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled
2000. Now, I can't open Outlook because it says outlook.ost is not
compatible with the version of personal folders information service (I
connect via VPN, if that makes any difference). Any ideas? Post or
email privately (I can check email via webmail) Thanks much!

Your subject line says .PST but your message says .OST...hopefully either
(a) you're talking about a .PST file or (b) in this case it doesn't make any
difference...because I'm not very familiar with .OST files so I don't know
if my reply will make sense for an .OST as well :)

Outlook 2003 has a new Unicode format for .PST files which is not compatible
with earlier versions. Unfortunately there is no conversion tool. You will
need to install Outlook 2003 again (or find someone else who has it
installed), open your .PST file in Outlook 2003, create a new .PST file in
the old format (you will get the option to choose formats when you click
File | New | Outlook Data File), and copy your data from the new format file
to the old format file. Then you can use the old format file with Outlook
2000.

Thanks for the reply, Jocelyn. The error message I receive says the
ost is incompatible, but everything I've been reading online says
there is an incompatibility issue between pst files in Outlook 03 and
earlier versions, so I suspect both may be culprits. In any case, it
sounds like the bottom line is to contact reinstall Office 03, follow
the directions to make the necessary changes, and try, try again!
