Pub2003 Bug: Right aligned tabs must be smaller than width of text box

Marcin Struzak

I have a Publisher 2003 Trial, and found an issue that drives me
crazy. In a text box a right-aligned tab must be at least 0.02" from
the right border of the box. Try the following:

1) create a text box of size, say 3" x 1"
2) make sure all text box margins are set to 0" (right-click -> Format
Text Box, select tab Text Box)
3) type two words separated with a single tab; the goal is now to have
the first word flush left and the other flush right with the edges of
the box
4) change the tabs (right-click -> Change Text -> Tabs...) by
introducing a single, right-aligned tab at 3"

Your text will most probably break-up in a vertical column of single
characters. If you go back to the tab settings and play a little bit,
you will find that the closest to the right border that you can place
the tab is 2.98", or 0.02" from the actual edge.

This looks really ugly in a header, made of a single line of text box
and containing the title of the publication flush with inside margin
and the page number flush with the outside margin. The box has a
single line underneath it created by enabling a thin border only at
the bottom of the box. On every page the text on the left is
perfectly aligned with the line, and on the right the line extends for
a small gap beyond the text (0.02", to be exact). This looks very
unprofessional!

If I cannot find an answer to this problem (any MVPs out there?) I
will have to investigate other products...

Thanks for any ideas.

I have another layout program that also requires that. Why don't you extend your
text box about 0.02 past the right margin. Then you can line up the
right-justified tab where you want it.

In addition, rather than the text box having the line, create a 3" line at the bottom
of the text box, send it to the back.

Look the Tabs in all versions of Publisher have always been an abomination -
so nothing has changed.

If you manage to find out how to get them to function 100% please post back
and inform everybody.

If you stick to using the Tabs in a very basic mode, then you will suffer
considerably less trauma.
