Publish problem; have to enter username & password multiple times

Am using Front Page 2003 Vsn 11.6356.6360 SP1. After making changes to web
page tried to publish it using Front Page 2003. Initially it was uploaded
with FTP voyager to smarterlinux host, but FTP voyager is not working either,
however the technicians have checked & the connection is working. So what
things should I try that I might not be doing correctly. I tried looking in
Microsoft data base and help files but couldn't find anything that worked.
Been struggling with this for quite a while.

Does the site have FP extensions? If so, using FTP will damage the
extensions which will have to be repaired or reinstalled, then publish
using HTTP and never use FTP.

If there are no extensions, then since FTP Voyager is also not
working - (any error messages or log reports?) - it sounds like the
problem is either you are using the wrong userid and/or password
(these are cAsE sensitive) or there is a problem at the FTP server.
It is possible that you may have to use Passive mode FTP, or the
non-passive mode if you have set passive mode.
One other thing to look at - are you using a firewall that may be
blocking the FTP applications?

Yes, the host smarterlinux activated the FP extensions the first time I
loaded the website. At that time I used FTP Voyager. Since then I was able
to update the site (www.rentmymountain.com) once with FTP voyager but had a
minor problem with the navigation bars loading as red Xs. So I tried a lot
of different things to get rid of the red Xs, including trying to publish
using FrontPage. I also started to learn HTML since 2 different people told
me the path for the button pictures was some _derived folder which didn't
upload. One person suggested that maybe I could copy these buttons, put them
in the image folder & make a new path to them but I don't understand the
script language around the buttons. My latest attempt consisted of first
trying FTP Voyager, then the http option in Frontpage publish site which kept
asking me over and over again for my username & password. Then I read
something in these posts that suggested using the ftp option in Frontpage
publish site. This is what happened. It took the user name & password with
no problem and showed both the local & remote websites side by side in
Frontpage. Then a conflicts popup appeared & said there were the following
conflicts: _borders/bottom.htm (also left,right, top)
_derived/accomodations.htm_cmp_blank000_hbtn.gif (all the buttons in this
folder)
I didn't know what to do so I took a guess & tried "Overwrite Remote files"
Then it asked me if I wanted to overwrite task list in Web site ftp:// & I
said Yes to all.
Then it asked me if I wanted to remove the file'logs' existing on
destination server but not current Web site & I said No to all
Then it told me that the following pages in web site contain link bars or
navigation bars the use new formatting options & will not display properly
because the server you are publishing to does not support these features. I
didn't see the picture files I wanted changed listed in the box so I thought
at least I can update the pictures, so I clicked ignore & continue.
Then Norton Security alert popped up & said that it detected & blocked an
intrusion attempt by Security Rule: Default Block WiinCrash Trojan horse
Path: C:\Program Files\...\FRONTPG.EXE, So I clicked OK because I didn't
know what that was or how to let it go through. I am a novice.
Sorry this is so long, but I am getting frustrated. I just want to update
the websites text and pictures along with hopefully fixing the red navigation
buttons. I want to be able to make changes on my computer, then upload these
changes with FTP voyager. I only have XP home edition so these problems
don't show up when I preview the page using the FrontPage look at website in
browser. Thank you for your comments & advice.

Thanks! However I still have problems & I don't know why. I redid a
simplified version in Frontpage 2003 that looks fine when I use Frontpage to
preview in browser but doesn't upload the pictures & navigation. Here's the
sequence of events:
1) Ran Norton antivirus, AdAware & SpyBot. My computer is clean
2) Smarter Linux host reinstalled FrontPage extensions on site, reset themes
& shared border. However they were not displayed on the site.
3) RePublish your entire Web from local machine to server using File |
Publish Web / Site via http://www.rentmymountain.com.
3.1) for Remote Web Site Properties/ Remote Web site tab: I selected Remote
Web server type: FrontPage or SharePoint Services, typed in the Remote Web
site location: http://www.rentmymountain.com & clicked OK.
3.2) for Remote Web Site/ Optimize HTML tab didn't do anything, just kept
defaults
3.3) for Remote Web Site/ Publishing tab: Selected Publish: All pages,
overwriting pages already on destination, Left selected Changes: Determine
changes by comparing source and destination, Left selected Logging: Log
changes during publish
3.4) (Pop up) FrontPage has detected that changes you have made to the
navigation structure conflict with changes another author has made to the Web
site you are publishing to. Selected "Replace the navigational structure of
the destination Web site & clicked continue
3.5) (Pop up) Server error: Cannot change permissions on file "Thumbs.db"
had to click OK
3.6) Only files that uploaded were _Private, Images & Photogallery folders
along with accomodations, activities, index & reservations htm pages. File
folders that didn't load were _borders, _fpclass, _overlay.
3.7) According to the publish log; User confirmed replacement of navigation
structure, Following folders were created: _borders, _fpclass,_overlay,
_private, _themes, images, photgallery, _themes/blank-pink-bg,
photogallery/phto00008a88 and there was a Servor error: cannot change
permission on file "Thumbs.db"

The default for Optimise is No optimisation - all check boxes are
clear. Is this how you saw the Optimise dialogue?

Delete Thumbs.db. Delete every copy of it from both local and remote
sites. This file should never be in a website. Its presence
indicates you have viewed the (local) site using Windows Explorer in
thumbnail view set to cache thumbnails.
Publishing would probably stop at the server error.

1. The thumbs.db should not be in your local web / site. To avoid having this file in your local web
avoid opening the folder containing your web with Windows Explorer or My Computer.

2. Ask host to check the FP Role settings to be sure that Themes/Shared Borders enabled for your
account.

The site works! I deleted Thumbs.db, 2 from local site & 1 from remote site.
I will be very careful from now on not to open the website folder except in
FrontPage2003. I think the default for Optimize was no optimization but I
can't remember. It didn't come up when I republished today but that might be
because I republished the local site to remote using the following default
option in Publishing Web Site Structure: LetFrontPage merge the changes,
clicked continue (instead of replace navigational structure of the
destination web site?)

In general it has never been a good idea to let FP merge your navigation structure with that on the
destination server. However if it worked for you that is great.
