publish problem

When I use the File>publish web. . . option, I get a list of filed on my
local directory. However, when I view the details of those files, often the
files are not "current". In other words, they indicate a particular file is
not the most recent version of the file I've created or edited.
Consequently, when I actually publish the web, not all "current" files are
published to my web.

Why doesn't the source window reflect accurate data about a file?

Are you "always" opening FrontPage, then a web and then a file to edit it??

If you edit / modify a file "outside" of FrontPage, ( without the web opened ) FrontPage
does not know the file has been modified.

Often (although not exclusively), I create a PDF as a hyperlink. Not to be
argumentative (just want to understand), but why doesn't FrontPage recognize
a files details like Explorer does? Can't the publish option recognize
updated details?

Thanks

Because you are working in a web environment, which is actually running on top of the Windows OS,
that is why you always need to have a web / site open in FP first, so the FP can manage the content
associated with the web / site.

When you work in Windows every document/file is standalone (there are exceptions), example you
insert an image into a Word document, and move or rename the image, the Word document is not
updated.

FrontPage does not use the file system for checking whether or not to
publish a file. FP stores that information in meta data files, which
are updated when a file is saved _within_an_open_FrontPage_web_.
These Meta data files also store when the file was last edited, the
author that changed it, where it has been published to, when last
published to each site - a lot more info. than the file system has, so
FP can tell whether a file should be published to Site A, or to site B
or both, or neither (if you publish to multiple sites.)
If you update a file outside FrontPage, the meta data is not updated.
For this reason any updated PDFs should be saved to the desktop (or
other convenient folder), then Imported into FP, so that the meta data
can be updated.
