Publish Problems

When I try to publish my site (using FP2003 on a Win XP Home machine), I
suddenly get an error message indicating "An error occurred accessing your
Windows SharePoint Services site files...", and the publishing process
aborts.

This is a sudden development and until now everything worked just fine.

I don't really know what "Windows SharePoint Services" are and have not (at
least, not consciously) installed or subscribed to this service.

So what is the likely cause of this and how can it be fixed?

Many thanks.

Background: Microsoft has two different server side
options --- Front Page Extensions, and Sharepoint
Services. These "extensions" allow your to extend your
site's capabilities. They run on the server and thus your
site needs to be published to the server for testing.

That said, my guess is the site you have created on your
PC probably requires Sharepoint Services. You probably
picked a template when you created your site and the
Sharepoint one looked like what you wanted.

If this type of site is what you really require, be aware
that hosting for Sharepoint sites is much more expensive
than non-Sharepoint sites.

I hope this points you in the right direction to solve
your problem. If you require more information on
Sharepoint, see Front Page help "Sharepoint".

Rick,

Thanks much for the detailed response.

My site was created about 2-3 years ago and since then I have not added any
new template based pages. As indicated in my original post, this problem
just emerged all of a sudden without any apparent external stimulus.

The site is hosted on a Linux server with standard FP extensions and I have
no desire to 'upgrade' to SharePoint services.

So how do I rid my local site of this Sharepoint ghost, so that it stops
bugging me with the error message and allows me to publish the site?

Thanks

SL

Sorry. I am out of bullets. Perhaps some more
knowledgeable soul will pick this up from here.

Contact your host and have them check the FP SE on your site
Also since you have had some publishing errors do some clean up
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
