Publisher 2000 fails to accept Excel 2000-9.0 for mail merge data

Unable to make Publisher 2000-SP3 accept address list in Excel
2000(9.0.6926SP-3) for mail merge to print sheets pf address labels. Since
both these versions of the Publisher and Excel programs were included in my
Office 2000 set as purchased I wonder why the incompatibility? I keep getting
error message that the data base has more than one worksheet (not true) and
it fails to accept the name of the .xls file as a data base. I tried saving
the .xls file as a text base .cmv but this also failed to be accepted by
Publisher for the mail merge.

Go to www.microsoft.com/data and download and install the latest MDAC
components for your operating system and your problems should be over.

If your problems are not over, then do a SAVE AS in CSV (Comma Separated
Values) and use that file for your merge data.

Thank you for suggestions. Believe my operating system has all updates.
Saved Excel 2000 file as .csv and again tried mail merge. This time was led
through series of commands about wanting to use first row of data as field
codes, all seemed fine but at end of process, message said Publisher could
not use the data as it could not recognize file format or data might be
corrupted. However this data still works in mail merge in Word 2000. I
still want to make it work in Pub2000 as this program works better for
address labels with graphic on each label (my opinion). If I use Word, I
have to copy each graphic individually onto master-label sheet and the
alignment is never as exact as Publisher performs the process since you only
have to design one label.
