Publisher 2000 Tabs

I have been using various versions of Publisher for several years and I
consider that I understand it pretty well, plus I was trained as a
typesetter, had my own typesetting business, and trained typesetters before
I retired, so I know a little bit about the subject. However, Publisher tabs
really drive me mad.

As I have indicated, I am currently using Publisher 2000 and when trying to
make alterations in a column of tabular matter, like adding a new line of
copy, every time I commence a new line the program will insist on entering a
new tab for me, when I don't want one.

I find this inability to do what I want to do, not what the program THINKS I
want to do, extremely frustrating. (It happens in other parts of the program
as well, I know.) Often, the only way I can find to overcome this phobia, is
to completely reset the part I am trying to change and then drop it in place
when it is finished. Surely, there must be a better way of doing this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried creating a text style?
Select the text box, format, text style, create new a style
You can set the font, indent, tabs, line spacing and character spacing.

If you paste/type your new line of text at the end of the previous line, place the
cursor before the new text, then use return the tabs should stick.

I hope you can understand that sentence...

Hi Mary. Thanks for your reply. Your suggestion works well, but
unfortunately it doesn't fit my situation and I can now see that I have
failed to explain my problem fully. Please forgive me.

This is what I am trying to do. Imagine five lines of type, each one only
half full of text across its width. At the beginning of each line is a
number, i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as this:

1 Flowering begonia, any size pot
2 Foliage pot plant
3 Cactus or succulent, any size pot

I use tabs to separate the figure from the first word of text (I can't do
that here, of course) and when I sometimes need to add a second line of text
below the 'first' line, Publisher insists on creating a new figure and tab!
For instance, if I press Return at the end of the line numbered '2' , in
order to start the second line, it will immediately put number '3' at the
beginning, which I DON'T want!

I hope this is clear and that you are patient enough to try and understand
it.

Many thanks

Eric

Try holding down 'shift' when you press enter at the end of a line. This
will start a new line without going on to a new paragraph and triggering the
auto-numbering. I hope this is what you're trying to do.

Tara

You can turn the autocorrect off too, tools, AutoCorrect options, "AutoFormat as you
type" tab

Or for a less permanent alteration, just press Ctrl-Z (or the Undo button on
the toolbar) when Publisher performs an AutoCorrect you dislike. Ditto
Word.
