Publisher 2003 - all pictures and backgrounds are gone

Don't know why but just recently we can no longer apply background templates
or colour backgrounds using Publisher 2003. All previous documents have
"lost' any pictures. Is this something to do with Adobe Acrobat 8? What can I
do as son is deperate to finish homework. Please respond using simple
terminology.
