Publisher 2003 - cannot save files on network drive

Several users within my company found that after we upgraded to Publisher
2003, they could not save files to a network drive. More specifically, if an
existing file is modified, it can be saved using "Save". However, if the
"Save As" command is used and the filename is changed, the following error
message appears:

"S:\Marketing\Design\Posters\flyer.pub is not a valid folder."

The server is running Netware 4.11, and I encountered a similar, but not
identical, error message when I first began using Office 2003. (Office
claimed that the destinations were read-only.) Since then, those errors seem
to have vanished. The users have full (inherited) rights to the shared
folders, except for Access Control. I've already searched the MS and Novell
Knowledge Bases, which didn't return any valid articles. Also, all Office
2003 updates/patches have been applied to these machines.

Hi Matt,

Does Word 2003 have the same issue? What about Excel 2003?

Please understand that Microsoft doesn't recommend to save from an
application directly over a network, this can cause corruption of the file.

Pleae refer to the folloiwng KB article and apply the hotfix:824424

Arnold, I tested Word and Excel 2003 from the same workstation and they do
NOT experience the "Save As" problem. I also logged in as supervisor and
granted myself explicit trustee rights to the test folder. No change--the
"not a valid folder" message did appear.

Here's something noteworthy: When the existing file is opened, in the
filename portion of the dialog box, quotation marks surround the file name.
For example, if I'm working with poster.pub and I choose Save As, the
default filename in the Save As dialog appears as:

"poster .pub" (including the quotation marks).

This seems abnormal to me. Have you seen this behavior before?

Hi Matt,

Frankly, I have not seen this behavior before as I don't have Novell
network environment. :( I would suggest you patch the hotfix and see
whether it will help.

Before that, please apply all the updates for Office 2003 first.

Sincerely,

Arnold Gao
